What is Autism?
Autism does not have a specific definition, however it is seen as a "lifelong developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with, and relates to, others." (National Autistic Society, 2013, p.1). It affects how "people understand their world and what is happening around them." (Dodd, 2005, p.6). As there is no known cure, Autism is a lifelong disability, however throughout their lives, individuals with Autism continue to grow, change and may show dramatic improvements in a range of skills. (Dodd, 2005).
Individuals with Autism generally have a triad of impairments impacting social relationships, social communication, and social understanding.
