Issue 2: Trouble Transitioning
Transitioning between and within activities during class time is a common issue for individuals with Autism. They have trouble shifting from one task to another due to a greater need for predictability. (Hume, 2008). This results in challenges in understanding what activity may come next, or the student becomes upset when an activity is interrupted." (Hume, 2008). Christopher gets upset when an activity finishes and he is still going. Not only this, but he has trouble knowing what the next activity is- even if it is the same every day. The issue of transitioning is important because it, as mentioned in 'Difficulty managing change', things need to stay consistent, and if some lessons are longer than others, this create unwanted stress for Autistic individuals. As a result, some tasks may not be finished because the student did not realize how much time they would get, and the next task may not hold their attention because they are still thinking about the previous task. An easy way to help students is having some sort of timer, or visual timing schedule.
