Issue 1: Difficulty managing change
Individuals with Autism experience difficulties with interpreting and processing any new information. (Dodd, 2005). They have a great dependence on routine, and like things to occur in a predictable and consistent way. As a result, an intolerance for disorder is built, and any change in a routine, activity or environment will result in high levels of stress. "Even slight disruptions to a routine, or changing the position of a particular object can result in severe behavioral or emotional reaction." (Dodd, 2005, p.42). This is an issue for Christopher as any feelings of uncertainty or change means he reacts by withdrawing into his own world and creates unnecessary stress. His learning is thus hindered. Life is of course very unpredictable with many hurdles, however there are a number of ways to help individuals with Autism to have as much order and routine in their lives as possible. Within the classroom, and even at home, timetables or schedules are vital.
